Breaking Artistic Lines

Posted on | February 1, 2008 |

There’s more than one way to tell a story. Just ask the guys from Flight of the Conchords, HBO’s new darling and our favorite show of 2007. FOTC blends a traditional script with music videos to document the adventures of two New Zealand parody musicians, creating a hybrid art form. The concept of bringing together artistic mediums is nothing new—think Warhol and The Velvet Underground (or Warhol in general)—but it’s especially relevant now as execs scramble to revamp their industry’s business model in the wake of the digital age.

FOTC not only caters to TV watchers and the bite-sized attention spans of our stimulation-addicted culture, it also combats the hard-to-chart waters of the current music industry. It’s a way for the guys in FOTC to actually make money from their music and entertain a broader audience.

In 2008, we hope to see this trend of breaking down artistic lines between music, art, film, and TV to continue—for everyone’s sake.
