Girls Gone Wild for Gaming

Posted on | February 1, 2008 |

Girls are breaking ground into the boy’s only world of gaming. They are kicking ass as Elvin warriors in World of Warcraft and causing a stir amongst the gaming industry. The number of women playing in 2007 has increased to almost 40% of the overall pie, which is predicted to increase over the next few years. The Nintendo Wii was one of the first game consoles to tap into this audience by gearing its marketing efforts equally to both men and women, and others are starting to take note. Video game creators are beginning to make female geared video games, while also incorporating more equal playing experiences, like female characters.  Women also make up three quarters of the Casual Game Association’s subscribers, making them an untapped marketing cash cow for advertisers.

Here are a few interesting tidbits you might want to know about gaming:

- The average game player is 33 years old.

- Over a third of adults own a video  game console.

- Of these owners, 70% are married and 66% are also parents.

- There are many official gaming leagues and sponsored “athletes,” celebrity gamers  and television networks dedicated to the subject matter.

- Guinness World Records is launching a video game edition of their annual book.
