Remo Camerota and Shantell Martin are global trendsetters who call Japan home. Like their lives, their artwork crosses boundaries and cultures. They are connectors in the true sense of the word. In the past year, CHOICE has had the pleasure of seeing both of these multi-dimensional artists in action.

“Japan has long been a breeding ground for innovative approaches to Western traditions, such as cinema and baseball. But the fanatical embrace with which Japanese artists have welcomed graffiti has spawned a form wholly distinct from its Western origins, replete with intricate kanji tags and anime murals.”

Shantell

Worldwide acclaimed VJ Shantell Martin is in hot demand these days—making waves in the digital art world. Shantell was trained as an illustrator but has branched out into collaborative work with fashion designers, magazine publishers, live bands and ceramic artists. Originally from London, Shantell now resides in Tokyo but is increasingly active in the States. During a recent trip, Shantell performed her popular “Hidden Ora” drawings and other works at numerous venues including Dancing on the Charles (Boston), guerrilla light projections on Newbury Street (Boston), Sutra and Studio B (New York) and Bloombars (Washington, D.C.). Having worked with brands like Adidas and Coca Cola, Shantell is now increasingly sought for private commission work. “There is this need to share, there is this need to collaborate, to be brought together by doing a piece of work.”

“In Tokyo I`ve had the chance to collaborate with musicians, fashion designers, bands, singers, graphic designers, people from many different fields… there are always little surprises around every corner, doesn`t matter where you go.”
